I’ll be moving to Japan in March 2024 as an English teacher. My plan is to teach English for a year then transition into iOS development.
However, I’ve looked on job sites like LinkedIn, JapanDev and TokyoDev and have found VERY LITTLE iOS developer openings (I’m talking low single digits).
I guess my question is, am I looking at the wrong websites? Are there any opportunities for iOS developers in Japan? I see plenty for web development but barely anything for mobile development (Android included).
This may lower my hopes even more but about me:
– I have no work experience
– I DO have 3 published apps on the App Store.
– I know UIKit and SwiftUI + Combine.
Is there any hope of transitioning from English teaching to iOS development or should I try to learn web development with ReactJS?
Edit:
I forgot to mention I also have a computer science degree.
Edit 2:
It seems like most people are telling me it’s a bad idea. There really seems to be no hope then. I’m from Texas and I graduated in 2021. I’ve been sending out hundreds of job applications and only got interviewed about 5-10 times. So I wanted to try my luck in Japan.
I’ve seen videos on YouTube of even people with no working experience (but a degree) getting web and mobile development jobs. So I wanted to see if there is a market for my preferred field of iOS. But it seems any sort of move to software development is being advised against.
When I went into this, people told me having published apps would help a lot (in the United States) but I’ve had no luck. Sigh.. it’s tough. I’ll keep moving forward though 😅
ALSO I’M NOT ON THE JET PROGRAM. I’m with a dispatch unfortunately. I wanted to find a way in Japan to find a job in my field because I had no luck in my home country the United States.
