Japanese grocery store haul

Are you guys getting your vitamin C this winter? I grew up in the eastern USA where we experience all four seasons. After moving to a place with less seasonal changes, I realized how important seasonal foods were to my mood. Seasonal food (and all pumpkin spice-flavored products) actually help me enjoy the transition into cold weather.

This region of Japan has all seasons, but I still grab persimmons as soon as I see them in the fall. The fruits I’ve shared today are still new to me and I’m really enjoying the variety available.

1. Awayuki (淡雪) strawberries 🍓- light pink strawberries that taste like candy. When paired with sweet condensed milk topping, it tastes like strawberry ice cream. I HAVE to try these in milkshake or smoothie form later. I made the mistake of only buying one pack. If I didn’t hull them and mix them into a pile of red strawberries, they would disappear before the weekend ends.

2. Alps otome apples 🍎(anyone have the kanji?) – very sweet and easy to bite into. They’re also a nice holiday season decoration sitting in a bowl on my window sill (while they last). They reminded me of the mini-apple decorations my mom keeps on her Christmas tree.

3. Yuzu (柚子) – Tart, like lemons, but still tasty enough to eat by itself. I want to try it with sprinkled sugar. I don’t expect any flu bugs to be successful with these in my fridge.

There was another that I didn’t post called melo gold. Apparently, it’s actually grown in California! I never saw it while living there, but it will be nice to try it. Maybe it’s more popular in Japan. 🇯🇵

What seasonal fruits are you guys finding? What should I try next spring?
