  1. This is an attempt to curb online bullying? After that girl’s suicide?

  2. > Japan to start…

    > Previously, the punishment was fewer than 30 days in prison…

What a clickbait titled article. They increased the maximum prison time and fine, they didn’t start anything. Has anyone even been imprisoned for the previous version of the law?

  3. Post-divorce my ex went mental… she hacked my e-mail/social media and was sending upwards of 100 e-mails/messages to me/family/friends a day.

She harassed my employer, my new girlfriend (now wife) and tried spoiling any job application that I made by telling them I was scum. She was RELENTLESS!!! Either she paid somebody to do all this or was just sitting behind her keyboard all day sending B2B e-mails to me and my contacts.

This absolutely destroyed me and cops wouldn’t do jack shit about it. They all said it was too complex, or not within their powers. Oh yeah… ‘just change your password or setup a new account’. Great, but honestly, setting up a new account every time she paid somebody to hack my account was a real shit as I’d have to start over each time (and inevitably lose a few important e-mails/docs in the move).

Eventually I registered an e-mail account without her knowledge (fake name), setup a new social media profile (no picture…etc – fake name + everything locked down), setup 2 factor on everything and made all my passwords impossible to guess. I also setup a headless Linux machine to handle various cybersecurity & spam filtering tasks (working it and keeping it up-to-date was like working fulltime cybersecurity gig in my spare time… sounds dumb but I swear she hired some Russian hackers or some shit as she always had a way into my stuff no matter what I did… it was cat-and-mouse for a couple of years).

Sigh. IMO they really do need to come down on these people hard as it’s fucking whipped when somebody harasses the shit outta you online. I welcome all reforms in this space!!!

  4. I never knew you could get jail time for this.
An old colleague of mine kept angrily ranting at a Japanese feminist writer on Twitter, and encouraging other losers to join in.

Then about a month later, he made a public apology to her and mentioned he also paid her for causing her emotional distress. I’m not sure about jail, but I’m assuming something went down to make him do that.

Regardless, it was hilarious and satisfying to see.

  5. Another issue here is that there are currently no legal provisions to prevent [SLAPP lawsuits](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_lawsuit_against_public_participation) in Japan. Look into how Osaka mayor and Ishin party leader Matsui is [suing](https://www.tokyo-sports.co.jp/entame/news/4223363/) comedian Suidobashi Hakase for 5.5 million yen for “defamation” for retweeting a critical video of him. (Suidobashi Hakase [gave a speech in front of Osaka City Hall](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZGKHEIxbWk) today discussing the lawsuit and abuse of power etc)

People in power might start abusing *this* law as well to shut down opponents who criticize (insult) them on the internet. Even if it’s just a retweet of someone else’s “insult”.

  6. Proud for Japan And its people! Glory to Japan! In my virgin country,Poland, someone sent me death threats and police dont care. But in Japan, youll be jailed for insulting and bullying and death treats! Damn, I must leave Poland ang go to Japan ASAP

  7. This is dangerous and not good for the internet because it will promote a state of people not being able to honestly Express themselves when they dislike or find particular disdained towards somebody and will produce a this genuine environment where a person feels that they’re always right when they’re really not this is a very dangerous door they are opening. Regardless of what happened to Hana Kimura rest in peace this is not the way to go about it you’re literally tampering with the internet in ways that you shouldn’t

  8. Just saying that some infamous people on this subreddit gonna have a field day.

And I am also wondering what chilling effect it would have on online reviews.
