I 28F just moved to Tokyo from Central Europe and I’m eager to make friend, since apart from my colleagues I don’t know anyone here.
I joined a several “expat” groups on Facebook and elsewhere, but so far my impression is that in all networking events/clubs and activities, most of the people are in their 40s. Which is fine, but I was thinking, that it might be nice to make some friends who are close to my age too.
So I was wondering, where do people in their late 20s/early 30s hang out? If you have some tips, I’m all ears.
I’m also eager to make friends with locals, but my level of Japanese is still quite low, so I don’t think I’m able to hold a meaningful conversation just yet…

Shibuya nightlife
What do you like doing on your free time, like after work and on your days off?
Find Hobby groups, its easier to “Speak in passion”
I got back into rock climbing when I moved here and it made me feel a lot less lonely, plys got me more active again.
Interested in this too, doesn’t help my hobbies are visiting new places in Tokyo without interacting with people haha.
Where abouts in Tokyo do you live?
I met most of my Japanese friends including my girlfriend at my favourite Irish pub in japan, and it works even if your Japanese is bad (I can barely hold a full on Japanese conversation myself)! A lot of the people there are from all around the world too if you need a break from speaking Japanese and from my experience it all worked out great since there’s a good mix of Japanese and foreigners.
Start a conversation with people and bonus points if you know how to play pool too as most of the conversations come from games in my opinion. When you see them again or exchange socials, things will blossom from there buddy!
Try joining a volunteer opportunity! I’m not sure how common that is in the Tokyo area but I’ve seen many friendships form over working together in a low-stress environment
The hub- British style pub
I would really suggest to try https://oopar.club/welcome, which actually help people new in the city to make friends over different activities. They do a lot of events and activities which help you to connect to the people and find people who match your vibe. Everything you are looking for in under one umbrella at Oopar Club.
I moved here from Europe as well. I like to do calisthenics, so I go to Ueno park for that. Very easy way to make friends with locals and other foreigners like that.
