Is it better to buy your own food and prepare it, or living through bentos all day? (Tokyo)

Hello, I will be moving to Japan for about 6 months next year and I’m planning my food budget.

From what I have researched is possible to get bentos for about 300-400 yen, but is it possible to get this type of food three times a day? I also want to visit izakayas and get to know different areas, but I will be living on a tight budget, How much does a normal Izakaya meal costs?

Or is it better to just buy your own groceries for 2-3 days (or even a week) and prepare your own food, I do not have any problem of preparing my own meals but I would love to save some money for other things chosing the best option possible.

PS: buying groceries would be for just one person.
