Itinerary check – Jigokudani Monkey Park worth it?

Hi all! Grateful for this sub as we plan our very first trip to Japan in a couple of weeks. It’s last minute and short-ish due to some limiting factors, so we know we won’t really see even a tip of the iceberg, but excited to have the experience and hope to go back again!

So we have 7 full days (excluding travel days from/to the US) and this is our current plan:

*(Day 1: Arrive Hateno 9:00pm, get to the hotel, sleep)*

Day 2: ExploreTokyo

Day 3: Explore Tokyo

Day 4: Morning train to Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, explore the park, stay in nearby ryokan

Day 5: Morning train(s) to Kyoto, explore Kyoto

Day 6: Explore Kyoto

Day 7: Morning train to Hakone, open air museum, one night at Yama No Chaya

Day 8: Morning train to Tokyo, explore Tokyo

*(Day 9: some time in Tokyo, 9:00pm flight back to US)*

My husband has always loved the idea of these snow monkeys, and we’re both really excited to experience such a unique natural wonder…and it also feels like it crams up the trip a bit, since it’s far north of anywhere else we’re going; and if we skip it that’s an extra day in Kyoto and one leg day of travel. Then again, we may not be back in winter and monkeys are cool! Any insights/experiences would be so appreciated. Thank you!!
