Hello folks,
I’m planning on a weekly tutoring via iTalki beginning of January to better my speaking skills. However, I’m unsure what teaching to look for, especially since I’m used to self-studying.
I’m through the first half of Quartet 1 and very happy with ToKini Andi for grammar explanations, so I won’t need a tutor for that. Vocabulary- and Kanji-wise I’m a bit further and finished N3 since I do that separately, same with reading (Satori, some manga, recipes and GBA games); I now need to apply grammar and vocab onto real conversations.
So based on that, how could a weekly tutor routine look like? Simply talking about random things every single time doesn’t really do the trick, right? Maybe I’m overthinking it right now, but I’m looking for some kind of consistency I can agree on with my tutor.
Any suggestion/experiences are highly appreciated. Thank you!

Talking about random things is all I ever did in my online lessons, you just try and apply what you learned that week and pick up new stuff along the way. Just get a teacher that only speaks in Japanese but ideally has enough vocab to say a word in English if you get really stuck on a meaning.
I feel like part of what you’re paying for is to get the tutor to evaluate your current abilities and come up with activities or methods for improving in the things you want. Basically, the person who should be answering your question should be the tutor instead of Reddit
When I was N3-N1 I only did JLPT prep with my old tutor. Now that I’m done with tests my current tutor has me do a lot of speaking and reading articles out loud. I do shadowing practice on my own sometimes too
She has come up with cool speaking activities based on a textbook she had. Prompts like “teach me how to ride a bike” or “explain (badminton) rules to me” to fill in my vocab gaps
