Hello, I want to start learning japanese, like one does, and I am into manga. Japanese manga is way cheaper than english manga so thats basically why i want to learn it but not just for that, i find it interesting as a whole. Here comes my question: Will reading manga improve my japanese? of course, after some basic learning. I am reffering to easier mangas not straight to shonen or stuff like that. More like Pokemon or doraemon or even your name.

  1. Maybe you’ll learn some words, but Japanese in manga is highly verbal, and many of the terxt aren’t even full sentences. I doubt it’s a good way to learn. Also the way the characters speak in manga is often too dramatic and over the top if it’s used in real life.

  2. Reading Manga, children’s books, and news or magazine articles in Japanese is a great way to supplement your learning. If you prefer apps, Bunpo is affordable and does a great job teaching basic grammar. Duolingo has a decent program for teaching basic / everyday language. If you lean towards textbooks, Genki 1 is a great, comprehensive resource for beginner Japanese.

  3. You’re going to need other ways to study, but manga can be fun to practice with. I recommend downloading Anki, picking a deck that’s right for you, and just studying. YouTube is great for grammar. I recommend Japanese ammo with Misa. The key is to stay consistent and to set reasonable goals. Don’t binge study.
