Can I make a decent wage in Japan?

Hello,

I have a BA in philosophy, a TEFL certificate, 4 years of experience tutoring university students when I was in school, and 2 years of experience working in an eikaiwa in Korea. I’m back in the US and I’m considering getting an MA in TESOL in 2024.

I was thinking about coming to Japan after that, but I’m not sure what jobs I’ll be able to get or where to look for them. I’ve checked Ohayo Sensei, but most of those jobs seem to pay about 250,000 yen or maybe up to 270,000.

The JET program, which many people say is the best first job in Japan, pays 280,000 yen. However, in Korea I was making 285,000 yen plus a free apartment.

So, I guess my question is will I be able to find jobs that pay more than this? And if so, where should I be looking for them?

I love teaching and I was pretty excited about the idea of coming to Japan next, but I want to know what options will be available to me before I commit and start studying Japanese and all that.

Any advice or thoughts about this would be appreciated. Thank you!
