In Japanese video games, checking some item boxes will cause fireworks to go off. Is there some reference/wordplay behind this?

I’ve noticed this in several older Japanese video games so far, such as Mother 3 for the Game Boy Advance (2006), the Disney game World of Illusion for Genesis / Mega Drive (1992), then in Doraemon – Nobita’s Dorabian Night for the PC-Engine (1991). I’m sure there’s more.

In all cases I’ve come across so far, you don’t get anything out of opening these boxes, just the spectacle of colorful fireworks going off. Is this some wordpay/reference that I’m missing? I only studied Japanese a bit in college so my understanding of the language / culture isn’t the best.

Does anyone know what could be behind this? Thanks a lot!
