Do direct addresses need a gap before the person’s name? (probably a dumb question)

This might be on me since I only really get exposure to Japanese through anime, but I’ve noticed that when people directly address one another, there’s a gap between the sentence and the address. To clarify, it sounds like when people say “Thank you, Person” that it sounds more like “Thank you. Person.” as if the two are separate sentences. Is this just dramatization or is this part of speech?
