I (27M) have been talking with a Japanese woman (22F) for a couple of weeks now.
– At first it was business as usual, calling each other with surname+さん.
– Then she told me to use her first name, so we switched to first name+さん.
– Later she started calling me first name+くん.
– Finally I started calling her first name+ちゃん and she insisted doing the same with my name.
I thought that 〜ちゃん was only for little kids, women or when being called by someone way older than you (like a grandparent), so at first I rejected that change and explained to her my reasoning. She told me that’s not true and you can easily use 〜ちゃん with men too.
Is it true? I’ve got discording opinions with a quick Google search.
I’m interpreting it as simply getting more familiar with eachother, no hidden meanings behind, but please tell me your opinions.
