Japan’s obsession with ‘prestigious’ universities

I have a friend finishing grad school at Todai. Despite not speaking Japanese and studying a niche scientific field that nobody cares about , he surprised me by successfully navigating the 就活 process and landing a job with a traditional/global but not really known Japanese company—that only has like 5 foreigners working in it.

When I asked him about the interviews, he shared that the company hired an interpreter for him and I was stunned, can the name of your school alone truly overcome language barriers like this? Hiring an interpreter for a fresh grad with no experience is news to me. I heard about japan’s obsession with prestige but this’s something else lol
