Where do y’all source your books?

I’m trying to buy some novels off of amazon.jp to Canada but the shipping price is very restrictive. For around 90$ worth of books the total comes around to 170$ after shipping (Amazon prime). Are there any sites that offer free shipping for a large enough order? Where does everyone here get their books from?

  1. I’m in the US but i get my books from Kinokuniya bookstores. They will ship, but i go to my local physical store. They are located in NYC, Chicago, and all along the west coast

  2. I usually check ebay, they do not always have everything but it is worth a shot. I also check this Japanese bookstore that has stores in the US, it doesn’t seem like they have a store in Canada though unfortunately. [https://usa.kinokuniya.com/](https://usa.kinokuniya.com/) There is a place called Bookoff but it looks like the one in Canada closed.

  3. Personally I read ebooks. I’ve been using Bookwalker, though their iOS app’s UI is pretty poor – it takes 3x button clicks to copy text, tor example

  4. Kinokuniya is fantastic if you happen to live in or visit a city that has one.

[https://www.suruga-ya.com/en](https://www.suruga-ya.com/en) is a second hand store with somewhat spotty book availability, but if they happen to have what you’re looking for, they occasionally offer free shipping on all orders which is a fantastic deal.

Most other options will have very high shipping prices, which there is no easy way around. My favorite is [cdjapan.co.jp](https://cdjapan.co.jp), but [amazon.co.jp](https://amazon.co.jp) is an option too. If you’re looking for manga, you can also check [manga-republic.com](https://manga-republic.com).

  5. As someone that lives close to London (UK), I visit Foyles. They have a big international floor with a section dedicated to Japanese. There’s a lot of books such as Genki, but also many others for JPLT levels, kanji, or even hiragana and katakana workbooks. They have some fun books too sharing proverbs, but also manga comics for learners. They even have books for children.

I often see some native Japanese speakers browsing the section occasionally with their kids choosing some books.

Even though the store is huge, it’s a really relaxed environment – a huge contrast to outside on the street.

It’s a shame something like it isn’t available in every country, it’s a really nice place to visit even if you’re not looking for any book in particular.
