How Do I Go About My COE/Visa Situation?

Hey, everyone. I recently decided to cancel my trip to Japan due to a serious family matter and had to turn down my teaching position with the company that sponsored my Visa. It still is my dream to travel in Japan but ultimately felt like it was necessary to stay with my family during some really rough times. I still possess my visa from the consulate that the company sponsored, completely unused and in my passport. My Consulate in Houston said to just send a signed document saying to cancel the old Visa whenever I apply again for another Visa, okay easy. However, I obviously need to apply for another COE whenever I interview schools again in 2-3 months. Will having this unused visa pose a problem? Is there anyway to cancel/void it, or is it something that I shouldn’t even worry about? I imagine it would look strange whenever I apply for a COE and the government sees I have an unused Visa.

PS. I asked the Consulate and they said that COE matters are in the hands of the ministry of Justice, so not too much help there.
