Yet another stupid police question #4080…

Been getting calls from a police phone number the last few days, been blanking them until today.

So here we go….

I was in a fender bender with my rent a car, the truck drifted backwards into me. This is a highly travelled road for trucks. The driver plus 5 other truckers jump out – screening gaijin this, gaijin that, baka, etc… I think you get what I mean. So I was in a tough situation, I saw a taxi and jumped into it told his to take to the closest police/koban, to give an idea the distance taxi was 1800 yen.

Oh course at least 8 cops show up, told then there’s a problem at this location. Cops bring the truck driver to the koban to ID me. She screaming all kinds of shit at me. I kept my mouth shut, she is blaming me for the accident, cops are blaming me for the accident. They got a phone translator, asking why I caused the accident (btw was sitting in the taxi with the window cracked open the whole time). All I said to each question “I have no idea what you are talking about” I didn’t admit I was driving, pretty much kept silent for the 3 hours. Taxi driver opens the door and police asked to search me, I refused. Then started accusing me of being drunk, however they didn’t ask me to for a sample. Again I said “I have no idea what you are talking about” . I was free to go.

The phone call today, the police asked me to come to the station or my home for a ‘interview’. I am lawyered up already, been a client with him 20+ years. I will speak with him on the 4th Jan about this. I am sure his advice will be just cooperate.

Stupid Question is, has anyone just blank the cops altogether, would I need to cooperate with them? Can they come after me if I don’t cooperate? If I decide to do the interview, I think it would be wise to do the ‘interview’ at my lawyers office.
