Am I using omamori correctly?

I’m a very superstitious person so I appreciate the help :))

I bought an enmusubi omamori from a temple in Japan last April – for a while I didn’t use it much and just kept it in my room, but after a half-year long string of bad romantic luck, followed by a bunch of strange supernatural occurrences, I’ve begun to carry it everywhere, usually always directly on my person tucked into the seams of my clothes.

I’ve heard you’re supposed to dispose of them at a shrine or temple after New Year, but I live in the UK so there’s no chance I can do that. But I’ll be back in Japan this April, pretty much exactly a year after I bought the omamori – is that an okay time to dispose of it?

Side question: Are you supposed to dispose it at the exact same shrine you got them from? It says 夫龍寺 大本山 tenryu ji daihonzan on the back, I’m not yet sure if I’ll be back in Kyoto to visit it
