Language barrier

Currently I am a language assistant in a different country where I speak the native language as well as English with the teachers here so I find it quite easy to not only connect with my coworkers but also my students.

My question is for current Jets that aren’t very fluent in Japanese and how they manage to connect or speak to coworkers/Japanese people. Ive studied Japanese but I only know the basics and no where near the same level as my second language. I also *hear* that English is not well known by Japanese people, is this true? Do many teachers understand/speak English?

Im curious how of this works and how well your communication is received.
