First Hamaya Arrow. What To Do?

Visited Japanese shrine for New Years and bought my first Hamaya. Understand how to display, but it came with all kinds of ornaments. What do I do with them? Do they remain attached? It has bells, Streamers, card with writing on it, wooden sign that looks like the ones that you write a wish and leave it there.

  1. Happy New Year! Leave the decorations on. Assuming you don’t have a kamidana or a tokonoma, just put it in the living room. Try to keep it high (i.e., on top of a dresser vs. on the floor). Technically it’s supposed to be over your head but “as high as possible” is ok. Japanese gods seem to be very pragmatic that way. 🙂 Try to keep it in an area that is clean and tidy and respectful. if you have any other spiritual items it can go with them. Keep the feather side up. The wooden plaque (I assume it has the name of the shrine and/or 破魔矢 written on it) should just stand next to the arrow.

You don’t put the arrow “up”. The tip goes down – but if possible when you stand up the arrow, the tip should be aiming (down and) towards the WNW this year. But with this part, too – just do the best you can with respect.
