Kumano Kodo/Wakayama Itinerary

Hey all,

I’m a college student that will be solo traveling Japan this May/June and am interested in doing some hiking/seeing more of rural Japan. The Kumano Kodo in Wakayama has piqued my interest, so I’m looking for some feedback on a very tentative plan. I’m not sure how feasible or interesting it looks, so would appreciate feedback!

I’ll be staying in Nara beforehand, so am thinking of taking the bus to Yunomine Onsen, spend the evening exploring the town and using Onsen, and staying in a hostel there overnight.

The next day, I’m thinking about doing the short (hour long?) hike down to the Kumano Hongu area. I found a really cool Airbnb/homestay, so am thinking of spending the rest of the day staying there and exploring local trails, etc. I’m not sure if this is enough for the day – does it seem engaging?

After spending the night there, I’m thinking of hiking from there (Kumano Hongu area) south to Koguchi, which looks like it takes about 6 hours. I found another cute homestay there, so would probably spend the evening/night there, then depart the next morning.

To get back to “civilization”, I’m thinking of taking the bus for an hour to reach Shingu. I don’t have a plan for my trip after that, so am thinking about finding a cute coastal town nearby to spend a day/night in – I really love exploring pretty places even if there isn’t a ton to do. Any recommendations in this area?

Again, I’m not sure if what I’ve planned would be feasible or fun. Any feedback would be super appreciated!
