Why is mentioning that you live in UR makes it an awkward situation?

From time to time when there were casual talks among coworkers and I mentioned that I live in UR (or danchi 団地), I feel that the conversation turned awkward quick. I’m not sure how to put it in words, but it’s just like they are avoiding it, or feeling sorry/pity, or the atmosphere just changed. Not happening all of the times of course.

I understand that it’s a government-managed building, so perhaps it has the image of it’s for people below average(?)… although some places are not even that cheap, and I found that some UR interiors are much better than the general places out there within the same price range. To be honest, due to that experience sometimes I just tried not to mention specifically about living in UR.

Does UR really have that kind of strong image of pity among the Japanese?
