Changing Nationality While on Working Visa or PR (Foreign to Foreign)

Hi all,

I hope everyone’s having nice holidays.

I hold a US citizenship as well as a European one, but my current work visa has my US nationality on it. I was wondering that if I should choose to give up my US nationality, is the process of switching my “registered” nationality a mere formality or there are risk of denial involved? Can this be done after I obtain my PR? Has anyone done this?

I am also considering applying for Japanese citizenship once I am able to do it, but seeing how my European birth country does not have any restrictive laws preventing me from investing for retirement, it might be easier to go for European passport and PR then becoming a Japanese citizen.

I understand that this is not a common procedure and better directed at lawyers but before I do that I was hoping someone here might’ve gone through a similar process already.
