This is something I struggle a lot, perhaps caused by my situation of living in Japan without having a good Japanese skill and proper foundation of the language, but whenever I try to speak Japanese I find it hard to choose which polite form I speak in depending on the person I talk with and to stick with that form as I talk to the person.
For instance I’d speak to my part-time work boss, a woman older than me, in -masu form but since she talks to me in casual way I’d unconsciously imitate her way of speaking and talk in casual form for a bit before catching myself on it then hurriedly add a pathetic “desu” at the end of my sentences (Good thing she’s a very chill person and understands that my Japanese skill is very limited)
Is there anyone else that have experienced something similar? Or any suggestions to speak properly? I really want to start learning and improving on the language more regularly again even with my busy schedule
