Moving to Japan (USA) – Remote Work as a Software Engineer

Hi all! Happy New Year!

I am a former teacher, transitioning to Software Engineering (should be done early summer 2024 and looking for jobs). My husband is still a teacher, but wanting to leave the profession as well.

He is half-Japanese and doesn’t have his dual citizenship any longer (gave up at the 20 something age mark and never renewed \*tears\*). We travel to Japan often and are strongly considering moving to Japan. We want our 2-year-old to attend school in Japan as opposed to USA and would love to spend at least a few years there while she is young.

I would love to work remotely as a Software Engineer while my husband works as a SAHD (and/or works an odd job remotely as well). He doesn’t want to teach in Japan fulltime, so that option is out… please don’t suggest (lol teaching burnout is real).

I know of GaijinPot, but are there other resources out there to find a remote Software Engineering job in Japan for a US foreigner???

I would want to work for a Japanese company (or other company located in Japan) specifically to ensure that we can be approved to live for several years as opposed to just temporarily.

Would getting a work visa be the way to do this?

Any input/ideas/advice is appreciated! TIA!
