UK / Italian national

Hello everyone! I’m a little confused by the visa information for a Brit or Italian on the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ site.

It seems that visa-free period is 90 days, meaning that I can simply fly there today and stay for 3 months, correct?

If (and I do) want to stay there longer, for UK nationals there is a footnote on the MOFO’s site: *”(Note 8) For nationals of those countries with visa exemptions permitting stays of up to 6 months under the bilateral visa exemption arrangements, those who wish to stay in Japan for more than 90 days are required to apply for an extension of the period of stay to the Ministry of Justice (Regional Immigration Bureau) before the period of permitted stay is to expire.”* Does this mean that I can go to Japan, and before the 90th day I must “extend”? Is it simply a declaration of want, or do I need to have some sort of paperwork to show what I’m doing?

Finally, my ideal plan is to study Japanese, so I’d have a student’s visa allowing me to stay long term, maybe even evolve that into a life in Japan. I read some blogs that this is possible but links are 404’d or outdated. I am hoping someone has gone through the process recently and can give advice on where to start!

Thanks all!
