I’ve been watching MIU-404 on Netflix and it’s amazing how you can tell characters are angry not just from their actions and voice, but they noticeably use “rougher” Japanese as well. It’s also a cool way to know who’s more polite/formal and who’s more relaxed or disrespectful (depending on what’s going on in the scene, of course).
You *know* it’s something interesting when a calmer character who usually sticks to more polite Japanese loses their temper and starts talking roughly. Oof. Someone’s in trouble in those cases. 🤣
As much as it’s hard to learn the different “politeness” levels, it’s really something to observe in native Japanese speakers.
