Double full-time remote jobs in Japan

I am currently employed as a full-time remote developer at a Japanese company and plan to apply for a permanent visa next year. I understand that a permanent visa does not limit the number of jobs one can hold, so I am considering applying for an additional remote job.

Has anyone had experience with this?

I would like to know about the tax implications and procedures in this scenario. Should I handle the tax filings myself, or will the companies manage the taxes for me?

  1. I mean, there’s really no problem *if* you can get both companies to agree—which I doubt they would. If I had the time for a second remote job, I would go full 個人事業主, work as a contractor, and do all the taxes myself to avoid issues with both companies.

  2. I am not a lawyer/accountant.

I think there’s a special checkbox on your taxes that say you’ll pay for things yourself rather than have your company adjust/pay for it.

I recommend you hire an accountant to work out the payments and make sure they check that box. I forget what it’s exactly called. That’ll make the residency/city taxes go to you.

The bigger complication is the social insurance/national healthcare. The Japanese have no concept of actually holding two full time jobs.

Like the other poster said, it’s probably better to register a sole proprietorship and see if you can find a fulltime remote job **outside** of japan and work out that income with your accountant as a sole proprietor. Within Japan, you will never get two companies to agree, it will be against the corporate rules (which somewhat function as bylaws in Japan). I’m sure it’s humanely possible but so unlikely.

Definitely wait until you get PR to do this. Tax stuff is a checked meticulously during the PR process.
