I am currently living in Japan as an international student. Just the other day, I ordered a smartphone through Aliexpress from China. I looked up the internet in Japanese and some articles say that I need to pay the import consumption tax of the phone UPON delivery.
I received the phone the other day sent by Japan Post. It was contactless and they left it in the mailbox. I received no additional e-mail or notice from Japan Post regarding the tax.
Should I clarify with Japan Post or just let it be? I’m worried that the tax must be paid by me going to the post office or something. And to be completely honest, I did not really check the invoice posted on the package and threw it away because I thought, “They did not give me any notice or charge me upon delivery, so I should be fine.”
(Update: I checked the invoice posted on the package from an unboxing video I took just in case. It wasn’t really clear, but I can see only one line on the invoice, which I assume might be the basic stuff (qty, base price, etc.) no additional lines whatsoever)
