I live in NYC and work for one of the large tech companies, which has a very large presence in Tokyo/Japan. It is a relatively senior position and well-paid. I don’t speak Japanese and don’t have a Japanese spouse/gf/bf. My company is mostly in a hiring freeze at the moment. There are a few positions in Tokyo but they require “full fluency in both Japanese and English.”
I see on r/Japanlife there are westerners working remotely and getting paid in US$. How does that work? Did they get their employer to agree to that or are the jobs just truly remote and employer doesn’t care? Do these people have to work at night in Japan?
Is my best option to learn Japanese and find a job with my current company? Do well-paying jobs that only require English exist in Tokyo? I would like to learn the language but I am also an impatient westerner who would rather get going now and do the learning along the way…..
Any advice, guidance or experiences would be appreciated!
