I messed up by not signing up for the pension system

Hi!

So I arrived to Japan in April 2022 with a student visa. I was a student at a Japanese language school until last month as I got hired by a Japanese company.

When I arrived I spoke 0 Japanese and I made some paperwork at the city hall as instructed by my school. However, I never heard anything about signing up in the pension system and just realized two weeks ago that I need to give my company my 基礎年金番号 before 入社 and learn about the huge mistake I had made.

We where in the middle of 年末年始 so I couldn’t do anything until a few days ago. I went to the city hall and they told me to contact my company and ask them to sign me up. Of course, they said they couldn’t do anything and told me to go to the 年金事務所.

I will tell them what happened and sign up and pay if I have any debt. My worry is, I read on the internet that it might take up to 2 months to issue the 基礎年金番号, is this true? I start working the 1st of February and I have to send them my pension number next week. So, I am really scared about this becoming a bigger issue.

Does anyone have had any similar experience?
