Question about shrines located on Buddhist temple grounds

I recently got back from Japan, and on a few occasions I found shrines located within Buddhist temple grounds. Specifically I remember seeing this in Asakusa and Nara. I tried doing an internet search, but did not find anything completely on point. Does anyone know anything about this/ can point me to a resource?
