Was rewatching Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo for the 100th time and noticed in the scene where the government official is at the mayors house that they are drinking spiked tea. What would the tea be spiked with? Opium? This movie takes places in the mid to late 1800’s but I can’t find reference to spiked tea on the internet. Does anyone have more information on this? I am super curious.

Sake is my first thought, which I now can’t help but wonder how that would taste
Nothing, because it’s a movie. All you need is the idea that it is spiked.
Mixing green tea and shochu is a common drink, even now. Typically you drink it warm.
Not sure what all these comments about make believe are. And green tea and sake sounds horrific.
