Should I consider working in academics here?

Hei! I’m a new Ph.D. student in Tokyo (male, 24). I came from Indonesia and had a dream to be a professor since elementaryschool.

Lately, I found out that academic industry won’t treat me great back home. Low salary, long time and bureaucracy before promotions, etc.

I really enjoy Japan, especially Tokyo, as I’ve been a fan of Japanese culture since Junior High School. Now I am thinking what if I apply for a job here after I graduate. Does anyone know any comment about working in universities in Japan? All I can see is some of my foreign professors seems like enjoying their time here. And last month my university actually recruited new professors, and a lot of foreigners sent an application.

One of my friend told me some bad things about working in Japan, like no salary adjustment after years working there, but I don’t know anything else. Would appreciate any comments and discussions.

Cheers,
FN
