If you drive north from Tokyo instead, you can see lots of cherry blossoms in late April. You’ll essentially be following the wave of sakura bloom as it moves northward. There are so many beautiful places in Tohoku with relatively few foreign tourists. Definitely off the beaten path.
There aren’t that many islands in central Japan. Most of the islands are in the Inland Sea or further in western Japan. Though some islands of note near Nagoya include Sakushima, Shinojima, Himakajima, and Takeshima. In Mie prefecture, the islands of Toba city are pretty famous.
