Weird question looking for help. Tax help/?. Wife is from JPN, she has a part time online job in JPN but lives in USA.

So I have lived in Japan for many years and have filed taxes as an expat US Citizen and know how to do it. But as a citizen I am required to report my Japan income but it all gets waived. I no longer have to do this since I am back in the USA… but I have a similar yet completely different question.

Now my Japanese wife just moved to the USA last Sept 2023. She has a little part time job for An NPO/NGO back in Japan that she does online. (Barely makes anythin doing this cause yen not good right now.) But None of the money ever comes to the US it is just deposited and sits in her Japanese bank account.

I am assuming she has to report this income as she is a non citizen permanent resident living in the US. And I assume tax liability is the same for US citizens and non citizen permanent residents

I am also assuming I can get this year 2023 waived with Form 2555 (or is this only for usa expats????) as she wasnt in the US for the entire calender year just like I got my income waived when I lived in Japan.

But for future stuff will she have to pay tax on that since she’ll be in the usa the entire calender year? Or are there different rules for US Citizens with jobs overseas vs non citizen permanent residents with jobs in their home countries With what they can exclude or have to report?

Or is there completely separate rules for this situation….

I have tried to make heads or tales of the JPN US tax treaties and I am at a loss. Just asking here before I go pay a CPA of HR Block….

I want to do this properly, honestly and the right way so I don’t get in trouble. I’m just confused cause this is a new situation for us and my first time filing married.

If any one else has experienced stuff like this Id love to know. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
