Tokyo to osaka/kyoto in a day

Im going to japan soon and was thinking of doing a day trip to osaka and kyoto. I was thinking of leaving tokyo at 5am on the shinkansen and then going to kyoto first and then taking a train to osaka after visiting a temple. Then taking the overnight train back to tokyo from osaka. Its about 25k yen for that trip.

I know this is kind of an insane trip, but I was just trying to see if I could get any advice on how to save money/make this trip a bit less stressful. I just want to see one temple in kyoto and eat in osaka.

Plan b would be to buy the jr arch/takayama-horkoriku pass, go to osaka first and then spend the night in kyoto and head back to tokyo on the slower train. That one runs around 19k yen plus hotel.
