Weekend Stupid Questions Thread – 20 August 2022

As per usual, feel free to ask any silly stupid questions or not so silly stupid questions that you haven’t had a chance to ask here. Be kind to those that do and try to answer without downvoting. Please keep criticism and snide remarks out of the thread.

  1. Will an approval on the MySOS app get me through the airport of departure? (USA to Japan). Or should I still get a MOFA form filled out

  2. I need to get my son a laptop for school. What’s the best store, website or method to look for a low-to-mid range laptop in Japan?

Thanks in advance for any helpful replies!

  3. Anyone know where to get Acai the fruit (frozen or fresh) from a store in Tokyo (between Shimbashi ~ Shinjuku but can go further) that’s not preprocessed powered or paste? I want to juice it.

  4. Anyone have an appointment at the US Embassy recently?

The guidelines say you’re not allowed to carry *anything* (no backpacks, drinks, etc). They also specify that they don’t have storage lockers available.

Not ideal going across town with our child on a hot summer morning carrying nothing but our birth certificates and sensitive passport documents… and I could’ve sworn they actually had a ton of lockers the last time we went.

Anybody remember seeing any? If not at the Embassy itself then at the nearest station?

  5. All my friends in the US are posting about pumpkin spice and I am reminded that I, too, am guilty of pumpkin spice crimes. Any word if Starbucks Japan will be getting pumpkin spice again this year? (Or a general time of year when they would be announcing this?)

  6. How long does it take to get the paper version of the vaccine passport at the city hall?

Do you just go, apply and they give it to you on the same day like the juminhyo?

  7. Two magnificently stupid questions this morning:

    1) For those who’ve flown with JAL’s LCC Zipair, on the website, it’s stated:

“This service is provided via a communication satellite, the flight and weather conditions may affect the connection stability.

If the access crows it will be hard to connect with internet.

Due to the need for the limited connection bandwidth to be shared among all customers, some internet services and/or websites may not be available.”

Not entirely sure what their second point about “access crowing” means, unless they mean everyone accessing the Internet at once and it gets crowded, in which case, it seems to be the same point as the third. But anyways, my question: is Zipair’s Wi-Fi good enough to stream Netflix, Disney+, etc?

    2) I’m planning to renew my driver’s license in Canada (for the… 4th time perhaps?) this month and then use it to get a Japanese driver’s license when I return next month.

I read online that in addition to having the original license formally translated into Japanese at one’s embassy or JAF, one must provide a “document that proves that you had stayed in the country or region where you obtained the license for a total of three months or more since you obtained it.”

So I’m wondering exactly what type of document this is that shows I stayed in Canada well over 3 months since initially getting my license however many years ago. Is there some kind of ‘license history doc’ that I can ask for at ICBC? I’m hoping to find out beforehand so I can avoid any confusion/headaches in Canada and streamline the whole process.

  8. i applied for mynumber based on the notification i got, forgetting that it was sent to my old, temporary address. is this going to be a problem or should i be registered in the system under my new address? there wasn’t any place to enter my address in the application online, it was just enter notification number and upload picture. i blame saturday morning sleepiness and general idiocy on my part

  9. Has anyone used Shinsei for a mortgage on a kominka or older building without PR? My wife would be the guarantor required for non-PR if I’m reading things right.

There are some rooms in rougher shape so, whilst I could potentially pay cash for it, I will need money for some work anyway and don’t want to obliterate my savings.

The building date is unknown, which seems like it might be an issue (when I looked at newer buildings with Prestia, they told me after 1981 was required without PR at least).
