Tips for working outdoors in Okinawa.

Hello,

I’ll be working primarily outdoors for two months in and around the military bases in Okinawa. I’ll start at the end of August and continue through November. Days will be \~8hrs of work total. I’ve gotten the sense that it’s quite hot currently and will transition to more mild weather into the fall (please correct me now if I’m mistaken!)

Are ticks a problem in Okinawa? If you have experience, have generic brands of insect repellant been effective or should I find more specialized protection?

I assume quick-drying, moisture wicking, sun-protective clothing will be useful. I’ll be wearing work pants, long sleeves and a wide brimmed hat as standard + a hi-visibility vest. Any other clothing suggestions outside the usual? If bugs are prevalent, have you used a face cover of any sort to fend them off?

Is rain gear useful? In hotter climates I find that it’s almost redundant, if you don’t get soaked by the rain, you’ll just soak yourself sweating under the extra layers. Is the situation the same for Okinawa?

We’ll have a car to take us from location to location, so I plan to carry a 64oz insulated water bottle and an insulated lunchbox.

For comparison, I’ve worked in Hawaii and in the coastal Carolina region of the US. Those were both hot and humid to me, but I get the impression that Okinawa is on another level.

I’m all ears for any other tips, tricks or suggestions! Thanks!
