Why the name of this Japanese sport is written in katakana if it came from Japan?

Hi, all.

First of all, I feel as the question i’m about to ask makes more sense language-wise than sports-wise, so i’m gonna ask here instead of r/ airsoft.

I recently rewatched an airsoft video on a youtube channel by Japanese players, in which the video’s title contains the word ‘ サバゲー ‘.

I translated ‘ サバゲー ‘ to romaji and found out it’s ‘ sabagee ‘, which is the name of the sport itself, known in the West as airsoft.

Second, I don’t feel it weird that in Japan it’s known as something, while in the West as another, as we see it happen all the time in anime (Ash Ketchum in Japan is Satoshi), but if the sport came from Japan, why are they using katakana to name it instead of hiragana?

Video in question, should anyone want to check it outk
