Short story: can our newborn enter Japan with US passport, and then we finish the paperwork to get him his JP passport and IDs?
Long story: Hi all, wife (JP citizen) and I (US citizen) just welcomed a new baby to the family last week. We have an appointment with the embassy to start the process of recording him on my wife’s koseki, but we don’t know how long it takes to get recorded. We aren’t sure we have time before we move (June) to record his birth, get a fresh koseki, and apply for his JP passport.
So could we enter JP with him on his US passport, then change his paperwork to have him be a JP citizen? Does anyone know how long it takes for kosekis to be updated?
