What makes more sense as a stop between Osaka and Yakushima Island – Iya Valley or Beppu?

Still trying to layout my itinerary and looking for a more off the beaten path spot to add to it. I realize Yakushima Island definitely fits the bill but after spending several days in Tokyo and Osaka I’d like to include another spot that is more focused on nature.

If I did Iya Valley, I could double back to Osaka and fly from Osaka to Yakushima Island. If I did Beppu, I could head down to Kagoshima and take the ferry. At least I think that’s how it would go based on my research.

If you have been to either Iya Valley and / or Beppu, would you recommend it? Is there enough to do at either location for a 2 night 1 day stop? Would it make more sense to switch the city order to make traveling easier?

Right now it’s

Tokyo -> Osaka -> Iya Valley / Beppu -> Yakushima Island ->Tokyo
