Hey everyone! I’m a 31 Black American female planning my first solo trip to Japan. I’m graduating this May and decided to make this trip as a graduation gift to myself. I also just had my first baby in December so I’m a bit nervous to take this trip. But I’ve been putting this trip off for years and don’t want to put it off any longer. This will also be my first solo trip.
Anyway I’m planning a trip for this May around the 15th-25th. I’ve got my flights pretty much figured out. Now I’m trying to put together an itinerary. Got a few questions for y’all.
How bad is the staring? This isn’t my first international trip. So I’m used to being the minority. Been to China a couple of times and the staring is something else. I’ve had my pic taken without consent. Even had my pic taken with random people on the street. So I’ve gotten used to it. Should I expect the same in Japan? I know it’s bound to happen, just need to know how bad it’ll be. Should I expect random people to try and take my picture?
I’m also looking to try and rent a kimono. I know some include hairstyling. But has anyone gone with braids? Like knotless braids? Any rental spots know how to deal with them? Or do y’all have any suggestions on which ones to go to? So far, Yae in Asakusa seems pretty popular.
I’m also open to any suggestions for a first time solo traveler. Though this subreddit has been super helpful so far. (general consensus seems to be to not do the Mario kart street racing lol)
TIA. I’ll probably be back when I finish my itinerary for y’all’s opinion on that too.
