Help Need Advice about the company Sumyca for apartment rental

Hi,

So long story short I am planning to stay in Tokyo from April to July and am in search of an apartment. I came across the website Sumyca which others on Reddit have said is pretty good. My bf and I contacted them about renting one of their rooms and they told us we could pay monthly, so we went ahead and started the process of getting the apartment. When we were starting to pay, it gave us the option of paying in installments for how ever many months we wanted. However, before we were about to finalize the payment, it said on our bank that it would charge us the full amount of rent for the 3 months instead of in installments. We now understand that this is supposed to be a sort of loan option payment system after looking at it but we feel like we were deceived since they said we could pay monthly which we assumed meant we would be paying a portion of the rent for each month we were there as in many other monthly rental systems.

Now, we are telling them we would like to cancel because we don’t want to have to take out a loan or pay the total on our credit card and have to take on interest rates and debt for something that isn’t horribly expensive since we were under the impression we could pay month to month.

When we tried to tell them we wanted to cancel they are telling us we need to pay a 20% cancelation fee when they forced us to sign a contract before we were able to learn about how their payment really is. Does anyone have experience with this? Would we get in trouble if we just stopped replying? Our intended booking dates are still almost two months away so it isn’t like we are hurting them by canceling 2 days after starting this process.

If anyone has some helpful advice it would be greatly appreciated.
