What happens if I declare more than the 1 mil limit of cash when re-entering Japan?

Could not find any info when googling this. I have a decent amount of cash back in the US that I would like to bring back to Japan on my next trip (in dollars).

You are required to declare anything over 1 million yen per person, correct?

So what happens if I bring back more? 1.5? 2? 3? 5?

I am happy to declare it, but what sort of alarm bells will go off, or what sort of paperwork will I need to have on hand? This cash will be a combination of money currently in my American bank account, and mostly American mattress cash that has been on hand in my family for many years. In other words, much of it will not have a paper trail. This is going to become Japanese mattress cash that will go towards a home purchase in the next year or so.

Not trying to break any rules, just want to know what to expect with a larger amount when passing through customs. My PR application will still be in process (hopefully not though) at the time of this trip, so I don’t want to get in any trouble or raise eyebrows.

Bonus question: Does my 4 year old count in the “per person” amount allowed to be carried?
