Just like everyone else, huge appreciation for any advice or suggestions.
I am a major Cold War/nuclear history tourist; so far I have visited and photographed/droned Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, the Trinity Site, the Nevada Nuclear Test Site, the Hanford Site (particularly B Reactor), and numerous remembrance ceremonies of those affected by the atomic.
These places and events are deeply fascinating, stemming back to reading about Sadako in grade school, and I approach this topic in a pretty intense and somber manner – seeing Americans standing next to the Trinity obelisk, wearing mushroom cloud shirts and giving thumbs-up while a visiting Japanese tv crew filmed made me pretty sick…
Anyway, that’s what thrills me – atomic age history, abandoned colossal structures, and engineering.
**Traveling from Seattle to Nagasaki to Hiroshima to Tokyo next month. So far the only solid items on my to-do list are:**
*-peace parks/memorials/museums of Nagasaki and Hiroshima*
*-Gunkanjima*
*-Shinkansen museum in Tokyo*
*-Gundam Factory in Yokohama*
*-any high vantage point I can get of a city with a view of skylines, skycrapers, ports, bridges, etc. I’m primarily a drone photographer so I have to give up on ever having aerials of the Peace Dome and it sounds like even Gunkanjima. But any high-up spot where I can marvel at a city or get a good shot with a long lens is ideal.*
Arrive Nagasaki evening of Wednesday March 13, planning to spend Thursday sleeping/recovering but will likely venture out in the evening.
Friday – Gunkanjima ferry 9am noon, Nagasaki museum/memorial afternoon and Mount Insayama for late afternoon and sunset.
Saturday – rail/shinkansen to Hiroshima early morning, memorials/museums mid-day, afternoon and evening maybe Miyajima? If not, I’m fine exploring the city center.
Sunday – Shinkansen to Kyoto, stop halfway to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha Sembon Torii before continuing to Tokyo
Monday-Wednesday – Shinkansen Museum, Tokyo Skytree, Gundam factory in Yokohama, Tokyo Metropolitan Tower, Godzilla head, basically goofing off and eating as I recover from the emotional impact of standing in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Would LOVE to get a high-up view of the Tokyo Tower structure for photography. I’ll probably indulge myself in Shinjuku but I am looking at staying somewhere a little more mellow like Shibuya
Thursday – flight home to seattle at 4pm
As stated, I would love recommendations. My post history is FILLED with the kind of stuff I like to photograph and experience. Lastly, THANK YOU so much for the information you’ve already provided in this community. Every contribution and collaboration has been monumentally influential in making this trip a reality for me!
