I’m a language school student in Kyoto.
I recently went into a “talk with locals in english” cafe and among very nice people in our group there was a weird guy with papers where it was written in english in front of him:
“There is a business opportunity for you […] you can sell japanese products on SNS to people from your countries […]” which he hidden at some point. (He didn’t directly show it to me and it was partly hidden by other papers in Japanese which I couldn’t read but I could clearly get this part.
I was the only non-japanese in the group and he kept trying to steer (or even monopolize the conversation) toward my visa status and if I needed money.
At the end he insisted to get me to write my name, which I refused. I don’t think he could do anything bad with it but I already was very wary of the guy and I would have said no to anything honestly.
At the end he asked for a receipt (which isn’t bad in itself but where I’m from, receipt are mostly used when you want to get reimbursed for a business expanse. I don’t know if there other explanation)
After speaking a bit about it with the other japanese people I reported it to the café owner at the end.
I’m not entirely sure what he was trying to sell me, to me it looks a lot like an MLM, but maybe I’m too paranoid…
Do you guys know what it is ? And is it something common I should warn my friends about ? Or am I mis-interpreting something ?
