Dear Japan travellers,
The short of it:
I’ve been looking furiously to no avail for a nice town or village in or near the mountains accesible by train or bus where I can make about three single day round hiking trips of about 10 to 20 km. I’m an intermediate/enthusiast comcortable with 800/1000 m ascends. Short ropeways are fine, but no climbing/mountanering or via ferrata. I wont really have time to leave Honshu so looking for somewhere west or no too far north of Tokyo.
Currently hesitantly considering (but far from sure about):
– Yamanouchi
– Hakuba
– Nagano city
– Matsumoto city
– maybe Narai?
As I said pretty lost and need help haha. Many thanks in advance!
Long of it:
I (29m) going to visit Japan this may and I’m desperately looking for a town in the mountains where I can stay for about three nights with some good hiking.
I’m first going to osaka and kyoto, so I hope to go hiking from about 11/12 may to 15/16 may. I’ll be having a suitcase and dufflebag with me, and since luggage forwarding gives me real bad anxiety, multiple day treks are out of option.
The town needs to be accessible by train or bus since I dont know whether I’ll have my drivers liscence yet and I dont want to risk it. I also wouldnt mind if the trails are accesible by public transfer.
I’ve looking furiously and desperately for a nice town using google, google maps, all trails, etc, but haven’t been able to find anything definitive.
I went to Garmisch-Partenkirchen last October and that was perfect so I’m hoping to find a Japanese rough equivalent.
I also would like to stay in a traditional Ryokan but at this point not picky anymore.
As said in the short of it I wont really have time to leave Honshu so looking for somewhere west or no too far north of Tokyo.
Currently hesitantly considering (but far from sure about):
– Yamanouchi
– Hakuba
– Nagano city
– Matsumoto city
– maybe Narai?
As I said pretty lost and need help haha. Many thanks already!
