  1. “We have to sell uranium to Iran because otherwise someone else will” levels of logic.

  2. What stake does Japan have in Ukraine?

And who cared when Russia did much the same in South Ossetia?

If Japan or anybody was going to be so virtuous with sanctions, the time was when the U.S. invaded Iraq. Or NATO invaded Afghanistan. Or Libya. Or heck, when Ukraine denied independence/autonomy to Crimea, Lugansk and Donetsk!

Oh but the screen people didn’t tell you about that so now I will go to downvote Hell.

  3. Amid the end of WW3, Shakhalin will be annexed to Japan. Makes sense to keep his position. My intuition told me it’s true.

  4. If Japan gives up the Sakhalin Project, all the concessions will simply go to China, which is geographically close. Giving it up won’t hurt Russia at all, and will give a boost to China, which is not in anyway the best case scenario for Japan.

  5. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2022/05/e11e09f86c85-japan-says-sakhalin-energy-projects-do-not-contradict-russia-sanctions.html) reduced by 66%. (I’m a bot)

    > Japan has no plan to pull out of two major energy projects off the Russian island of Sakhalin and the policy does not contradict the slew of sanctions it placed on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine, a senior government official said Sunday.

    > "If we give up our stakes and Russia gets them," Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Seiji Kihara said on an NHK television, energy imports could be "More costly" for Japan in the long term.

    > Asked about the likelihood of Japan tightening its sanctions against Russia by phasing out or banning LNG imports from the resource-rich country, Kihara said the government will "Think about how to deal with it when it becomes necessary" in light of the unity of the G-7, including Britain, Germany and the United States.
