I have various angel investments abroad, was wondering about the tax treatment of those in Japan.
Some are direct investments from myself.
Some are through SPVs – a lead investor organized the investment, I chipped in.
Some are through funds – a general partner is running the fund, I invested funds, the fund made investments in various companies.
Say that there was some exit event, either a gain or a loss on my investment and I was disbursed the proceeds from the exit event. How is this treated and is there any difference between the ones done directly or through SPVs in individual companies or the ones done through funds (where the fund itself has not finished)?
None of these would be considered listed stock. But I believe this would still fall under stock investments.
(I am mostly interested in this as a way to offset capital gains from the sale of unlisted company RSUs)
