I’m somehow learning Japanese passively: today I watched a tutorial and I understood it almost perfectly. Do you think just being exposed to the language from the N4 level onwards is a viable way of learning?

I’ve studied a bit of japanese before, and I understand most of the n4 study material, but I have never actually delved into deep studying sessions. I do listen to a lot of japanese music and watch a lot of anime as well, not to mention that some of my youtube feed is in japanese. So, in one way, I’m constantly being exposed to the language. However, even for an n4, isn’t learning the language purely by listening a bit too hard?

My guess is that you ought to be around n3 level and I’m not near that level yet. I’m also currently studying chinese mandarin which does help with the kanji and , whenever I’m listening to music, I like to read the lyrics along with it. Still, I don’t usually check for grammar or vocabulary, I just pay attention to what is being said and check the dictionary for things I don’t know.

I don’t believe I’ll achieve fluency, but I certainly am noticing a lot of progress and I think I can get by in japanese now. I’m just feeling really happy right now because this was a 13 minute video on how to draw the human body, so it’s not like it has easy vocabulary either.

Although it takes way longer than to deliberately study the language, I find this method fun and viable if you have a basic understanding of the language, not that it’s a replacement for serious study.

what do you think of this? Should I do more with it? I have tried playing some visual novels, but I can only understand about half of what is being said, and I can read about 30% of it
